How Do I Become a Referee?

Whether it is a match on a public park, or the World Cup Final, the one thing that remains absolute is the role of the referee. So whether you fancy becoming the next Francis Andrews (Europa League Semi Final Official) or stay refereeing in the local youth leagues, this is the place to start.

The Ayrshire Referee Association are running classes from Monday 13th February until Monday 9th April at St Josephs Academy, New Farm Loch, Kilmarnock:

The classes run from 7:00pm until 9:00pm and are open to both male and female, from the age of 16 years. The costs of the course is £30, which should be paid on either the first or second night. Turn up on the night to register or contact Tom Loy at secretary@ayrshirerefs.co.uk. Every person attending will be subject to the new Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Disclosure Check).

There are 3 parts to the exam:

1) Written exam where you need to attain an 80% pass mark

2) Oral exam where again you require to attain an 80% pass mark (basically this is watching incidents on screen and then interpeting what you have seen)

3) Practical - whereby you referee one match at Under 13 level, where you are accompanied by an experienced member of the association who will give guidance and assistance.

Once these parts are ALL completed, then you are a fully qualified referee with both the SFA and the Ayrshire Referees Association.
